Hair was the thing, it was long and wavy, disco and gravy...

1981- Styles and Smiles

It is hard to believe that those same chalk marks on the wall behind them are still there.
Fashion of a bookworm: styles changed so much in twenty some years.
Watauga sweatshirts, though undoubtedly different, are still worn today with just as much pride.
Spirit week has been crazy for longer than we've been around. The homecoming parade was so big way back when.
This looks like it could have been taken yesterday.

most of the practicing occurred in the gym.

there aren't too many of those anymore.

Its funny how things change. This store no

Class of 1972 ~ Who Were You?

That was sooooo long ago! The front of the school moved forward and engulfed this sign and wall in the mid 90s expansion. The flag still flies but about 40 feet to the southwest of this location. Of course back then there were less stars on it too ;-)

These Cheerleaders were sporting white uniforms in 1972.

At least three of them went on to become teachers.

This is one of the youngest (and cutest) teachers in the science department.

Patty Blanton you Rock!

Harlan Ledford (father of the cheerleader above) was sporting a pompadour hair style and a killer neck tie. Sort of a Keith Haring design if you see it.

Bobby Harmon was Harlans' bud and he too had a daughter who wound up teaching at WHS.

Bob Davis kept an eye on the antics of his auto shop boys, and wouldn't you know it, he too had a daughter who teaches at WHS!

Graduation robes were black back then and gold tassels were worn by the academic honors students. (that tradition was abandoned in the late 80s but has made it back into the ceremony in the 00s)

Ms Wells and her art club. Two of these students have made their name and livelihood making art, Tracy and Tim.

Jim has that "look"....

Class of 1970 ~ the Beginning of the Seventies

Student life was spirited and changing. It was a time of transition in our schools, our community, our nation.
Of course somethings were a little unusual, here a couple of Hillbilly DJs

Spin tunes on the record player of the day in the lobby. Note, there were even remote speakers, separated from the player!

But the hillbilly students sure didn't seem to mind, the tunes were groovy, and the climate relaxed.

Lil Abner and Daisy Mae were the costumes worn that day.

The times were a changing, this is downtown Boone, King Street in 1970. There is a phone booth on the corner in front of Melanies Food Fantasy, but of course that was a greasy corner then, a filling station was there first!

Cars were bigger, muscles and land yachts were the rides.

Where was this Phillips 66?

Such a different "tourist image" could be found in Boone.

Even the mood in advertising was light and white bread.

Dr. Andy Miller was your principal. We have had 12 others since then~!

But some things don't change, I believe I saw this snoozer just last week!

and thankfully, there were those who worked hard and had a vision for their future too.

There were queens and gents of the Christmas dance. Her majesty is crowned here by Santa.

Golf was making its way into our sports catalog

and at least one "Pro" made it out of your class.

Tennis was in the swing and Harvey slices a mean backhand.

After only five years, we were already under construction. Here the work on the CTE wing has begun. Though then it was called Voc Ed.

And in keeping with this seemingly animal house, Mr. Fidler and Mr. Atwood and their mighty steed march down King Street!

The future was plastic in the new cosmetology classes, how about those dome dryers!

It was a small small world after all!

The marching band was mighty parading down King street. (notice the gas price was 33 cents a gallon!)

The lockers were full length, from floor to top. And bulls eye dots were the fashion of the times.

The Future Farmers of America were many in the 1970s. I wonder how many have been able to remain in farming after 4o years?

Students drove school buses all over the county.

The cafeteria hasn't changed very much in all of these years. Nor has the food for that matter ;-)

We used to have a large lecture room in the middle of our school. Around where the computer lab and guidance offices are now.

And what is this ancient machine these young people are staring into?

A hip health warning, examines the problems of substance abuse and calls for an unhooked nation. As we continue to do to this day.

Some things never change. And these teens had to apologize for throwing erasers at teachers? What was that all about?

Betty Wells was the first Art teacher at Watauga High School.
The Business education department put together the cornerstone and foundation for the future of our program. This dynasty would last at WHS for 20 years.

Another foundation was laid at WHS. The first house project ever constructed was begun in 1969. Under the instruction of Robert "Bob" Coffey and John C. Smith (below)

The Carpentry and Bricklaying classes built the framework for the school custodians house. It was near the entrance of the school where the tennis courts are now.

The frame work is well underway in this photo, soon the bricklaying will begin.

Mr. John Smith's personal truck was used to haul students and materials to and from the site. The house would be finished next year and the school custodian would live on campus for many years to come.

1968-69 ~ The new Watauga High School has completed the first cycle of its life. Out of a melange of mistakes, achievements, experiments and events, there emerges the first four-year graduating class.

The 1969 seniors are the "keystone" class - a group whose personal success marks the success of Watauga as a consolidated school.

Tim Westmoreland and Richard Randall were judged the first place affirmative team in state debating competition. Richard was named state champion.

This photo was taken from within Mrs. Elvey's English V class on Sadie Hawkins day. Even on this casual and playful day "hillbillies" must study, as Reggie Weber proves by giving and oral report.

The Backbone of Watauga: "School Spirit"!

The Lettermen in their letter jackets listen and watch at a pep rally in the lobby of our new Gym.
Slow Dancing with dignity and grace (at least while under the watchful eyes of administrators and teachers) was every girl (and guys) romantic dream or nightmare, depending on how it went.
Dancers enjoy the Sweetheart Dance sponsored by the Freshman class. Music was provided by the Transistor Tangerines. The Lobby was transformed and covered with cupids and valentines.

A reader just informed me that the name "Tangerine Dreams" was a take off on a popular rock bands name of that era, the "Electric Prunes". Now that is a band I remember! ;-)

What has happened to this poor child's head?

Yes, there was a time when "curlers" could be worn out in public. But those plaid pants in the background are definitely a fashion no no ;-)
Varsity Cheerleaders: Monnie Blanton, Shelby Hampton, Ollie Jackson, Jenelle Payne, Sarah Hayes, Debbie Bryant, Barbara Baird, Ann Gilstrap, and Chief Janie Doughtery.
Future President Paul Miller promises "....to represent each of the students of this school to the best of my ability". Today, Paul Miller is our School Board Attorney and represents all of us to the best of his ability.

An interesting side note regarding electing student body officers in 1968: There were 17 candidates, students had to register to vote in the elections, 65% of the students voted and 94% of the faculty voted.
This year, 2008, is the 40th homecoming for the Class of 1968. These are the Homecoming attendants from 1968: Monnie Blanton, Dorothy Hodges, Jane Ragan, and Kathy Aldridge.

Shine a light on the future, Junior attendant Ollie Jackson went on to teach, coach, and serve in administration and leadership at WHS.

This was your Musket, Class of '68. A break with tradition in burgundy red. But tradition was not yet known by this class of 68. Only three years in the school the tradition was unfolding. In this yearbook notes old friends share their wishes.
So shout out to Tricia, I have your yearbook ;-)
The yearbook was dedicated to William R. Ross; "A teacher whose dauntless spirit and enthusiasm for Watauga and its students is unmistakable.
His persistent desire to help students is displayed both in and out of the classroom. He provides challenge and opportunity for experience in acting by directing the senior play every year. It is indeed a privilege and an honor to have Mr. Ross on the staff of Watauga High School.

A mentor and science teacher from the early years, Lewis Coffey gave us 35 years at WHS. Eventually serving as Principal of WHS on two different terms.

Auto mechanics continues to grow under the instruction of Robert Bob Davis.

Class of 1968 ~ 40 years ago from 2008

Your school in 1968 was new and "modern". Just look at the equipment in the science labs! Here Willie Edmisten teaches a student how to use a microscope.
Andy Reese demonstrates the use of equipment in his science room. Sliding chalk boards opened to the prep room for the science labs.
Sixteen mm movie projectors were the first AV advancement in classrooms since filmstrip projectors and every teacher had the pleasure of threading film with sprockets and feeders.
Watauga was the first in our region to have closed circuit television with remote connection to ASU. Classroom instruction could be shared, monitored, or directed from the High School or the University. The future was then and now such a relic of the past.
Can you imagine being able to simulcast and broadcast with the college in 1968?
Even our mass communication or PA (public address) system was the newest and best. Here Dr. Andy Miller contemplates the message he will share with the school.

A Few Personalities from the Class of 1967

I found it interesting how many of the outstanding students of 1967 have remained in the community and continue to contribute. Those who began in a New School with Modern Facilities and the Current Methods and Technology of the day have carried the Pioneer spirit forward.

I must admit I am rushing this a bit. I'd like to revisit this class in the future there are many other personalities that I wanted to share. Hope to get back to this year soon.

All Things Change in Meaning and Form.

Bob Davis started the Auto Mechanics class this year, engines were simpler then. Something you could take apart and figure out! And hopefully put back together again!

Because you might even be a student working on a bus engine that you were going to be driving that afternoon! Student drivers were the mainstay of bus transportation throughout the county.

Here Carl Fidler, assistant principal in charge of buses, hands a paycheck to a student driver. Well deserved compensation for an awesome responsibility that time left behind.
Volleyball was played and a dynasty begins for the girls and athletes at WHS prior to title 9!
Even words have new meanings a mere 40 years later, but the school spirit our "Marching Pioneers" demonstrate carries on today.

Crime and Punishment remain a constant. But the methods used to reform misbehavior is much different today. Can you imagine anyone wearing these signs today?

How does one know what the future will hold? Look at the past and realize All Things Change in Meaning and Form.

The times were good and our mat men were gaining recognition and fame.

A Sense of Place ~ Progress the Prerequisite for Tomorrow

The enthusiasms of thoday are the lifeline for tomorrow. The visions of the future can only be fulfilled by daily accomplishments. These step-by-step acheivements add up to be progress.
This was the second year in our NEW Watauga High School. This aerial photo was taken by the late Hugh Morton if Grandfather Mountain in a fly over with Grover Robbins of Hound Ears.

To those readers who are familiar with the current high school campus; try to recognize the features that still remain from that "modern school" of 1966. If you "click to enlarge" you will see our cafeteria, main gym, and the courtyard in the academic quad. It is hard to recall that the old New school was designed around 4 core areas since over the years we have lost the divisions between the sections with "add ons and fill ins".
Vending machines in school meant "School Supplies" not sodas, fruit drinks, candy and caffiene. Pencils, real wood #2 pencils, were 5 cents and a real "ball point pen" could be purchased for a quarter.
The most modern of business training was made available to all. What is this machine in the photo above? One of the new clubs at WHS in 1966 was the Future Business Leaders of America.

Progress occurs in an endless number of fields, public education being one of the most vital. A thoroughly modern school, the New WHS featured a language lab which allowed the teacher, Mrs. Anita Eppley, to speak and listen to her students through her headphone and microphone. Remember this was the highest level of educational technology in 1966!

These Were the Days ~ 1966-67

This was downtown Boone, still pretty much a one light town.

Sadie Hawkins Day was the highlight of the year and students and teachers participated in the good spirited fun. The sophomore class worked hard to turn Watauga High into Dogpatch, USA for the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance.
Everyone who attended was dressed in the typical Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner costumes. After much observation the judges chose Ollie Jackson and Tommy Kirk as the most representative of Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner.
Music was by the "UNDECIDEDS".

The Undecideds provide the music for the girls to catch boys by. The band was composed of both sophomores and juniors and provided entertainment at many local functions.

What is that strange item these students are studying? Is it a model of the planet Saturn? Contemplating the problems of our modern and troubled world are Barney Hodgson and Betty Schull, our "Most Intellectual" seniors.

In those days students actually knew what a "globe" was. When was the last time you saw a globe in a classroom? How interesting in this day of political and geographical change that just a few years ago, something like a globe could be considered a valid reference! ;-)

Music groups were quite the thing in 66-67. This is another WHS band. This band was known as "the TRANSITOR TANGERINES" and was a senior singing group composed of Barney Hodgson, Gary Meeks, and Jimmy Higgins.

Somethings Remain Constant

Hard work paves the way to success. Focusing on the future and working in the present insures positive outcomes.
I found it interesting to read the topics for the graduation speakers in the first class of the new WHS.
Diane Hagaman questions, "are you an Optimist or a Pessimist?"
Linda Rainey challenges her fellow students to "Dare to be Different."
Mike Sink, top honor graduate, presided over the graduation ceremonies and introduced his theme: "Nothing Old Under the Sun".

I believe in my 33 years at WHS, I have heard variations on these themes at perhaps 30 graduation exercises. And each year the notions are as fresh and original to the graduating seniors as their neophyte intellect can sustain.

It is in these fresh dreams for the future that we see the results of our teachings. As they exit stage right with diplomas and a handshake, enter stage left the next freshmen class.

In the next post I will try to spotlight some individuals who created a WHS personna.

The LOOK ~ 1965-1966

William R. (Billy Ralph) Winkler demonstrates excellent form in the delivery of his "shuffle" in Varsity Gym.

Moving into our new school with new uniforms and attitude our majorettes strike up the band with precision twirling and posture.
The "ping pong craze" had swept the nation and we were on the game in these mountains.
Sometimes a gesture, a glance, a "Look" says it all.
Captured on a state of the art camera for all posterity.
Times were simple and times were complex.

The classroom was lively, but the attention was focused.
Modest and proud our new cheerleader uniforms sported our first "W"!
The future was now and our look was "modern".
Without the heritage preserved in our new yearbook, the "Musket" these images, stories, and reflections would not be possible.

Much of the text and narrative for these posts will be taken directly from the Musket. We are appreciative and thankful for the legacy the students who have labored on our yearbooks over the years have provided.

Dr. Miller accepts his duties as first principal of WHS.
As principal he set forth the regulations which served as guidelines for establishing the dignity of our school. His wisdom and understanding have played and important role in the success of our attempt to attain unity. A soft voice, a quiet walk, a gentle yet firm dispensing of justice, and unobtrusive air of competence ~ these qualities and more portray the image of the first principal of Watauga High School.

The New Old WHS ~ First Year 1965-66

This is in tribute to the past. In this blog I will try to capture the Pioneer Spirit of WHS over the years. Over the next 100 weeks I will explore the heritage that is the Old Watauga High School.

I am sure I will miss something important, not see someone who made a difference, or make mistakes in this story. And I am counting on you, the reader, to send me your suggestions, let me know what I should try to learn, and help me tell our story.

Five schools closed their doors and histories that a larger institution might be born. In order to create a large dream, it is necessary to sacrifice smaller ones; such was the case with Watauga High School when five dreams for educating tomorrow’s leaders became one.
We, the students, created the school and gave Watauga High School its meaning; our spirit established its valor.
The past, as always, paved a new road to the future. We can never forget the experiences the past held; they prepared us for our future.
As we cannot forget the past, we cannot reject the future, for it holds life.

So, with the death of five wonderful histories, we gain the birth of a magnificent future.

With the passage of the bond issue on September, 1963, the massive project of building a new consolidated high school was begun. The five existing high schools – Appalachian. Bethel, Blowing Rock, Cove Creek, and Watauga Consolidated- merged into one.

Then overnight the finishing touches were being added to an ultra-modern building and the major portion of it was ready for its occupants. Time marched onward.
